Again, Why? the Big Picture of the Alberta Regulated Professions Neutrality Act (Slaw)
: In my previous column on the Alberta Regulated Professions Neutrality Act , [1] I focused on subtle details of the Act and the important implications of those details for how the Act worked and what it did. [2] In this column, I focus instead on the major flaw of the Act, which flaw is glaringly obvious but seems to have received relatively little attention and prompted relatively little pushback outside the legislative assembly. [3] Nothing in this column is revolutionary or imaginative or even particularly original. But it is worth emphasizing nonetheless. While the Act has implications for many regulated . . . : Setting the debt parking brake lfair November 30, 2020 | 12:14PM Setting the debt parking brake By Lesley Fair What are the biggest risks of parking? A dinged door? A bruised bumper? For consumers victimized by the pernicious practice of debt parking, the impact on their financial health can be devastating. And if you’re a debt collector who engages in debt parking, an FTC settlement with Midwest Recovery Systems suggests you could face law enforcement action for violations of the FTC Act, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, and the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Just what is debt parking? It’s the practice of placing purported debts on consumers’ credit reports without first attempting to communicate with the consumer about the debt. Some call it “passive debt collection,” but there’s nothing passive about the injury it can inflict. Consumers often don’t learn about it until a mortgage company, prospective employer, or other decision maker pulls their credit report and spots what appears to be an unpaid deb[...]

France’s ‘casseurs’: why the term fails to do justice to the extent of looting and spiralling unrest (The Conversation – Articles (FR))
: Following widespread looting sprees and acts of violence occurring on the sidelines of the October 17 student protests, so-called “casseurs” seem to be the centre of attention. But the term, which comes from the French verb casser or “to break”, poses more questions than answers. The sociologist Paolo Stuppia examines the unprecedented situation many cities across France are having to contend with, and the complex combination of collective action whose motivations are unclear and the social media’s extreme agility. The Conversation: How unprecedented are the scenes of looting that we witnessed on the sidelines of the October 17 demonstrations? Paolo Stuppia: What may be unprecedented is the extent of the destruction of private property and the goods that have been stolen. It should be clear, however, that not all the looters can necessarily be sorted into identifiable groups, at least politically. Indeed, as the politician Xavier Crettiez, the sociologist Isabelle Sommier and the historian François Audigier [...]
L’urgence dans les rouages du système de maintien de la paix et de la sécurité internationale (Sorbonne Student Law Review - Revue juridique des étudiants de la Sorbonne)
: An armed aggression provoked by one of the permanent members of the Security Council, coupled with the subsequent arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against his representative testify to a breakdown in the system of peacekeeping and collective security put in place in the UN Charter. Yet, this is not the first crisis in this system. Against threats to international peace and security, strategies for empowering, delegating and adapting powers have been developed. The notion of the “emergency” of the reaction acts as a driving force for the empowerment and the gradation of institutional powers, but also for their delegation to other bodies or subjects of international law. These systemic adaptations of the structure of the maintenance of international peace and security through the notion of emergency reveal its finalistic nature: emergency makes it possible to achieve the goal of maintaining peace and security by influencing the assessment of an act’s conformity with international
Hikari project: the first positive energy block in Europe (ESPI2R)
: A block of three buildings in Lyon Confluence Hikari is a mixed-use complex located in Lyon (Confluence district), designed by Kengo Kuma between 2012 and 2015. Covering approximately 12,800 m² across three interconnected buildings, it brings together housing, offices, and retail spaces. It is recognized as the first positive energy urban block in Europe, meaning it produces more energy than it consumes for electricity, heating, and cooling. The buildings are designed to act as active energy producers. Climate-friendly energy The project relies on a combination of climate-friendly energy systems. Photovoltaic panels are installed on the roofs and façades, while solar glass façades generate electricity and regulate daylight. Energy production is further supported by combined heat and power systems using rapeseed oil, geothermal energy, and cooling drawn from the Saône River. This hybrid approach integrates multiple renewable sources. Energy efficiency through passive design Energy efficiency is also achieved [...]

Your e-commerce clients will want to know about the FTC’s first ROSCA case , filed recently in Nevada. According to the lawsuit, Health Formulas, LLC and a tangle of related California- and Nevada-based companies and individuals – consumers may know them as Simple Pure Nutrition – pitched a variety of products for weight loss, muscle building, virility, and skin care. The defendants advertised diet supplements like Pure Green Coffee Bean Plus and RKG Extreme as a shortcut to drop the pounds: “Burn fat without diet or exercise,” “Extreme weight loss!” “Shed pounds fast!” “[...]

: A clothes look at the RN database: Q&A with FTC staff lfair October 5, 2017 | 11:18AM A clothes look at the RN database: Q&A with FTC staff By Lesley Fair It’s not much bigger than a postage stamp, but the label on many textile, wool, and fur products provides important information, including fiber content, country of origin, and a company name or Registered Identification Number (RN). The FTC administers the RN system and industry members will want to check out recent upgrades to the RN website . With RNs and labels on our mind, we asked some common RN-related questions to attorney Josh Millard, whom we’d label as one of the FTC’s go-to people on the subject. First things first. What’s an RN? JOSH: A Registered Identification Number (RN) is a numerical designation – the prefix RN followed by a set of digits – that identifies the company responsible for marketing, distributing or otherwise handling a product covered by the Textile, Wool, and Fur Acts. Because some labels are small and some company names a[...]
