The Cut-and-Play algorithm : computing Nash equilibria via outer approximations (Faculté de droit Travaux récents)
: dc.contributor.author: Carvalho, Margarida; Dragotto, Gabriele; Lodi, Andrea; Sankaranarayanan, Sriram dc.date.issued: 2026-03 dc.description.abstract: When players in a game face messy decisions—like yes/no choices, rules layered within rules, or conflicting objectives—traditional algorithms often fail to find stable outcomes. Carvalho, Dragotto, Lodi, and Sankaranarayanan introduce a new algorithm, Cut-and-Play, that breaks this barrier. Unlike previous methods, Cut-and-Play handles nonconvex and unbounded decision spaces—the kind often found in real-world markets, public policy, and artificial intelligence systems. It works by iteratively solving simpler approximations of a complex game and then refining them with mathematical “cuts” until a solution is reached. Most strikingly, the algorithm finds equilibria up to 10× faster than existing techniques and is the first of its kind to offer a general-purpose solution method for this class of problems. The work is a leap forward for both the theory and applic[...]

: Planning a social media marketing campaign? Read this first. lfair November 13, 2018 | 12:24PM Planning a social media marketing campaign? Read this first. By Lesley Fair It started as one of those “run it up the flagpole” ideas to enlist big-name gymnasts to promote a brand of mosquito repellent just as news stories about the 2016 Brazil Olympics were sounding warnings about the Zika virus. Public relations firm Creaxion Corporation and specialty sports magazine publisher Inside Publications used a variety of digital strategies on behalf of the brand: athlete endorsements, social media posts, “advertorials,” and consumer reviews. But according to the FTC’s complaint , their efforts violated established FTC advertising principles. Which of those strategies are you using? And are you avoiding legal pitfalls by making appropriate disclosures? Creaxion – an Atlanta-based marketing and PR company – was approached by client HealthPro Brands to help launch its mosquito repellent. They agreed Creaxion would produce[...]

FTC wants your feedback about proposed Made in USA Rule (FTC USA Business Blog Posts)
: FTC wants your feedback about proposed Made in USA Rule lfair June 22, 2020 | 4:04PM FTC wants your feedback about proposed Made in USA Rule By Lesley Fair If your clients are interested in Made in USA issues – and you know they are – there are two developments at the FTC they need to know about. First, the FTC just announced a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for a Made in USA Labeling Rule . You’ll want to read the notice in detail, but the proposed Rule would apply to labels on products that make unqualified Made in USA claims. (In FTC parlance, an “unqualified” claim is a broad representation made without limitations.) The proposed Rule would incorporate established guidance already set forth in FTC decisions and orders and in the agency’s 1997 Enforcement Policy Statement on U.S. Origin Claims . Consistent with that guidance, the proposed Rule would prohibit marketers from making unqualified MUSA claims on labels unless: Final assembly or processing of the product occurs in the United States; All significa[...]
Nixing the Fix: Warranties, Mag-Moss, and restrictions on repairs (FTC USA Business Blog Posts)
: Nixing the Fix: Warranties, Mag-Moss, and restrictions on repairs lfair March 18, 2019 | 10:24AM Nixing the Fix: Warranties, Mag-Moss, and restrictions on repairs By Lesley Fair First, the bad news: That nifty purchase needs a repair. Now the good news for consumers: It’s still under warranty. But where can they go to get it fixed? Can the manufacturer restrict a consumer’s ability to go to the independent repair shop of their choice? Can the manufacturer use glue, non-standard screws, and proprietary diagnostic software that make it difficult for independent repair shops to fix things? Do limitations like these affect consumers’ rights under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act ? That’s the topic of Nixing the Fix: A Workshop on Repair Restrictions , an FTC event scheduled for July 16, 2019 . Enforced by the FTC, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act helps consumers make informed buying decisions and gives them access to remedies if the widget starts to fidget during the warranty period. One key consumer protection unde[...]
