: You can read incoming CALL President Yemisi Dina's first From the President's Desk column on our website. It was published in the June 2023 issue of In Session , the bulletin for CALL members. In her message, she emphasizes the importance of the work by CALL committees and special interest groups: "During the initial years after I joined CALL/ACBD in 2006, I recall joining a few committees and SIGs after being invited by some more experienced colleagues. I found this experience very fulfilling, and it exposed me to different levels of professional development. Some of the committees and SIGs need volunteers . I encourage you to identify something that interests you and where you would be willing to make an impact." "Thank you to all those who have put their names forward and to all who continue to assist." : Le texte français suit. CALLeagues, With the release of the program for the annual conference , I hope to see many of you in Moncton. This varied and engaging program is the tangible result of the vision and leadership of our Conference Planning Committee Co-Chairs Michèle Leblanc and Laura Corscadden, with guidance from our Second Vice-President Pia Williams, along with the hard work of the volunteers on the subcommittees, and the many speakers who will be sharing their expertise - how fortunate we all are that these currents will converge in a month’s time in the “Hub City”. Leading up to our flagship event, the first part of our annual general meeting will be held on Monday, May 11, 2:00PM-2:30PM ET. While the formal notice will soon be sent to your inboxes, I could not wait to let you all know now, as this is the forum in which our many committees and Special Interest Groups report on and celebrate their activities and achievements from the past year. As we prepare for our most important events of the ye[...]
: Le texte français suit. The Professional Development Committees of the British and Irish Association of Law Librarians (BIALL) and the Canadian Association of Law Libraries (CALL/ACBD) are delighted to announce a new exciting initiative coming soon – the International Law Librarian Pen Pal Programme. This informal programme aims to support professional development by connecting law librarians from BIALL and CALL who are interested in sharing experiences, perspectives, and ideas across jurisdictions. Participants will be paired with a law librarian from the partner organisation and invited to connect once a month, primarily by email. Those who prefer may also choose to meet online. Each month, the Professional Development Committees will suggest a discussion topic to help structure conversations, while leaving participants free to explore related areas of shared interest. The programme is intended to: Encourage international peer-to-peer learning Foster professional connections between law librarians in the U[...]
: September 30 has been a significant date in Canada since 2013, when Phyllis Webstad from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation shared her story of attending St. Joseph’s Residential School in Williams Lake, BC, for the first time in 1973. As a youngster , she proudly wore her shiny new orange shirt, only to have it taken from her by the school. Since then, Orange Shirt Day has been a national movement in Canada where people across the country wear orange in honour of Phyllis and other residential school survivors, so that we both recognize and raise awareness of the history and legacies of the Canadian residential school system. This year’s Orange Shirt Day, September 30, 2021, is also the inaugural National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. As part of its mandate, the Diversity, Inclusion, and Decolonization Committee (DIDC) of CALL/ACBD is committed to fostering awareness and acumen in respect of issues of diversity, inclusion, and decolonization within all sectors of law librarianship and related[...]
: Le texte français suit. CALLeagues, This will be my last message as your president, and to start, I am grateful to each of you for reading this monthly bulletin and staying informed about the business of CALL/ACBD. In an age when we are bombarded with emails (I am rather embarrassed by the number of unread messages in my inbox), the fact that this newsletter is opened by ~60% of you each month is a positive indicator of your engagement. As the month of May coincides with our marquee annual conference and the transition of leadership on the Executive Board and some of our Committees and Special Interest Groups, it is my hope that some of you will elevate your engagement by lending your time and expertise as a volunteer. As I mentioned in my first message as your president in June 2025: “the ongoing vitality of our association is built on the dedication of our volunteers, and each of you has invaluable skills, expertise, and life experience with which to contribute” and nearly a year later, this remains very m[...]
: Le texte français suit. CALLeagues, Following up on this thread in our Member Forum - Globe and Mail reports CSC preparing to eliminate all prison librarian positions - I am proud to let you know that I signed on behalf of CALL/ACBD the open letter that was prepared by Book Clubs for Inmates. I am grateful to Amy Kaufman for sharing this news item with the association, and to Karen Sawatzky for speaking to it at the Executive Board so that we could lend our voice in support of this important cause. As this example shows, our Member Forum is the space to share news and items of interest to your colleagues from coast-to-coast-to-coast, and I look forward to reviewing more of your forum postings. Looking ahead, and following on the elections that were held last month, it is my pleasure to announce your Executive Board for 2026/2027: Katarina Daniels, President (continuing) Pia Williams, First Vice-President (continuing) Sean Holdner, Second Vice-President (acclaimed) Catherine Cotter, Treasurer (continuing) Mar[...]
: Le texte français suit. Dear CALLeagues, It was wonderful seeing over 160 of you in Moncton last month for a fantastic conference! I am still thinking about some of the sessions, from Dean Michael Marin's keynote on embedded librarianship and the role that law librarians have in legal education and practice, to sessions on generative AI use in law faculties and law firms, negotiating vendor contracts, and more. A huge thank you to co-chairs Michèle Leblanc and Laura Corscadden and the entire conference planning committee for all of their hard work. We have received wonderful feedback already, though a formal survey will be sent out in the coming weeks. Please do look out for that. As I settle into the president's role, I want to thank Jason Wong for an outstanding year at the helm. Jason's focus on community building and financial sustainability moved us forward in real, tangible ways, and his commitment to inclusion set a standard I hope to maintain. Thank you also to Mary-Jo Petsche for her four years on t[...]
May was a law librarian and a professor at the University of Laval in Quebec. In 1989, Denis chaired the conference planning committee for that year’s conference in Quebec City. Denis is well known for authoring published works such as La recherche documentaire en droit , The Civil Code of Québec in Chart Form , and Le code civil du Québec en tableaux synoptique s. Together with John Eaton, Denis is the co-author of Essential Sources of Canadian Law / Les références essentielles en droit canadien. [...]

The application deadline is April 1, 2022. Here is what Dolores asked the blog to share: The Canadian Association of Law Libraries recently unveiled criteria for the new Nancy McCormack Emerging Leader Award. : From time to time, this blog will highlight initiatives, ideas, or activities coming from members, committees or special interest groups (SIGs). Today: An Update About Web Tracking Tools , by Katie Thomas, Resource and Reference Librarian, Stikeman Elliott LLP (Toronto). The CALL Knowledge Management SIG had a session on November 30 th that looked at Web Tracking Tools. There are a lot of website tracking tools out there so it helps to have a guide to get you started. I based my presentation on the AALL Cool Tools (access only for attendees of American Association of Law Libraries 2021 conference) session where eight trackers were evaluated. In our session I asked the participants to write down sites they would like to track and they were all different. So, there is a need! First, what criteria should be used for evaluating? It depends. Every workplace is different and different things needs to be monitored. However, there are three that stand out. 1. Ease of Use You don’t want to spend time setting things[...]
